- ½ cup plain breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil for browning
- 2) For the Onion Gravy:
- 2 large yellow onions thinly sliced
- 2 cups low-sodium beef broth
- 1 packet / 1 ounce / 28 g onion soup mix
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons cold water
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley optional, for garnish
Instructions:
- Add the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, kosher salt, and black pepper to a large mixing bowl.
- Gently mix everything together until the ingredients are evenly combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.
- Divide the beef mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into an oval patty about ¾ inch thick.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add the burger steaks to the hot skillet and sear them for 2 to 3 minutes on each side, just until browned. They do not need to be cooked through.
- Arrange the sliced onions evenly across the bottom of the slow cooker.
- Place the browned burger steaks on top of the onions.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the beef broth and onion soup mix until well combined.
- Pour the broth mixture evenly over the burger steaks.
- Cover and cook on LOW for 6 to 7 hours or on HIGH for 3 to 4 hours, until the burger steaks are tender and fully cooked.
- About 20 minutes before serving, whisk the cornstarch and cold water together in a small bowl until smooth.
- Stir the cornstarch slurry into the cooking liquid in the slow cooker.
- Cover again and cook on HIGH for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the onion gravy has thickened.
- Spoon the hot onion gravy over the burger steaks before serving.
- Garnish with chopped fresh parsley, if desired.
